Greetings from Tahoe

*Lake Tahoe's average elevation is actually 6,225 ft

Some pictures from the past few weeks...

Here's a few pictures from the past few weeks of random events, including more fire spinning at Whole Earth Festival, Sylvia's Alumni Rugby game, Garrett's 3-on-3 Basketball tournament, and our visit to Tahoe on Memorial Day.

Pretty fire spinning during WEF.

This is pretty much the old team Sylvia played with from 2004-2005 (the team that made it to Nationals). We killed the UCD team, cause we're awesome like that.

Garrett during his tournament. It was a fun day in the sun, but Garrett left with probably the worst sunburn he's had since he was 13.

Garrett accidentally tripped while coming down this rock. But he's like a cat, always landing on all fours. (Just kidding, he jumped down).

View of the lake from the Rubicon Trail in South Lake.

After lunch on the rocks at DL Bliss State Park.

Mira Nair

Last night Sylvia saw Mira Nair speak at the Mondavi Center.

She's a very intriguing woman who gave a wonderful speech about her decision to go into film making, documentaries, and general commentary on life. After her speech she gave some interesting advice to aspiring film makers during the Q&A session. I especially liked a statement she made about anthropology, while poking fun at her husband, who studies anthropology: that her movies do not try to explain the socio-cultural elements in her film, that they just portray what she would like people to see, it's more about her story and what she wants to get across rather than a study of the culture she is filming (i.e. Indian). Probably the best 15 bucks I'vs spent this year, I was completely captivated...now we just have to watch Mississippi Masala and Salaam Bombay to catch up...p.s I highly recommend the book, The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, or the movie that Mira Nair made. Both are pretty incredible.

Visiting the Corpse Flower

About a week ago we were able to visit Ted the Titan, UCD's own blooming corpse flower. It was pretty stinky, but didn't quite smell like rotting animal flesh. It more or less smelled like garbage. Learn more about Ted here.

Oh happy day...
